Artist Statement
A person’s childhood impacts them deeply and shapes them into who they grow up to be. The lessons we learn as a child are important and meaningful, and I find the way they are presented in stories, rhymes, and ideas, fascinating and beautiful. In my concentration, I keep certain aspects of my art childish, with the use of bright colors and the repetition of simple shapes, while also presenting them in developed compositions to portray the subject in a unique way. I focus on my personal childhood because of its significance to me and because I want to share my perspective with others.
In my work, I have created images inspired by the stories, rhymes, and ideas I was familiar with as a child. I work mostly with acrylic paint but have also integrated fabric and embroidery to my works. I use the acrylic to create detailed images and the fabric materials to make my art more tangible and diverse. In my art I hope to cause viewers to remember their childhood and see the simplicity, creativity, and relevance of the understanding of a child. I aim to create my art to captivate the viewer while still remaining a reflection of childhood, manifesting certain lessons and observations that are commonly overlooked.
